Join a small group of writers and editors Kate Sullivan and Connie Hsu from Little Brown for a weekend of critiques and fellowship.
Many of us feel this is the most valuable event we hold for serious writers. It is very popular and usually sold out. This year, our annual spring retreat will feature two editors from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers: Connie Hsu and Kate Sullivan.
Connie Hsu
Connie Hsu is an Associate Editor at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. She acquires picture books, novelty, and selected fiction. She has an affinity for Edward Gorey, Roald Dahl, and graphic novels, and has acquired a similarly hilarious middle grade novel, The Adventures of Nanny Piggins and Happyface, a fully illustrated YA novel by the Emo Boy comic creator Stephen Emond. She most recently acquired a novelty project by Salina Yoon, a picture book biography based on Booker T. Washington by Jabari Asim, and is working with Samantha Berger, author of Martha Doesn’t Say Sorry and the upcoming Crankenstein. Prior to jumping into children’s books in May 2006, Connie worked as a reporter for In Touch magazine and TV Guide, where she wrote in-depth articles about Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua and watched television for a living.
Kate Sullivan
Kate Sullivan is looking for literary or commercial novels. Kate works on the Darren Shan program including The Saga of Larten Crepsley, his highly anticipated prequel series to Cirque Du Freak, and his standalone reimagining of Huckleberry Finn, The Thin Executioner. She is the editor of Ash by Malinda Lo, an ALA William C Morris YA Debut Award finalist and Lambda Award for YA nominee. Her most recent acquisition, The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by debut teenaged author Kody Keplinger, came out September 2010. She is primarily looking for novels that make her laugh aloud on a crowded subway, are smart without being boring, or have strong, defiant characters (who may or may not have a penchant for monstrous behavior). Previous to working at LBYR, Kate was an editorial assistant at Walker Books for Young Readers, where she also worked on picture books.
